Update 4: We are very happy to report that we have heard from friend, colleague, and ResourceShelf from Kevin Adams in Christchurch. He is fine as is his family. Not a lot of damage to his house but he reports that some older buildings (several around the from his home) received heavy damage. Kevin says he has power and water at home.
As most of you probably know, a massive 7.4 earthquake has occurred in New Zealand today. The quake was centered near the city of Christchurch on the South Island. As you would expect it has done a large amount of damage. The mayor of the city said the earthquake was, "sharp, severe and terrifying."
First, our thoughts and prayers all with all of you. The same goes to all of you with friends and family in NZ.
Second, a frequent contributor to ResourceShelf and a friend to many in the library world (he posts on several lists) and has been a member of SLA for years, Kevin Adams, resides in Christchurch. About two hours ago we sent an email to Kevin but have not heard back. We can see from a news ticker from the New Zealand Herald that at least one person was able to contact her son via what reads like the telephone. Hopefully, that means that Internet access remains available. Of course, power is another issue. As soon as we hear from Kevin we will update this post.
Third, we will post quake related links and news below.
+ FYI, Christchurch is GMT +12. You can get the current local time here.
