What follows is an overview of the new look and layout (what you are now seeing) of ResourceShelf and its sister site, DocuTicker.
We hope you like it.
Why Change?
Here are three reasons. We could go on with more but let’s keep it at three for now.
First, what we will now call the “old layout” was getting old. (-:
ResourceShelf has been online for 9.5 years and in one form another, the look as always been the same. It’s the same reasoning behind DocuTicker’s new look.
ResourceShelf is published by FreePint and is part of the FreePint Family of resources to support information work. The new design integrates ResourceShelf more closely into the FreePint Family. This makes it easier to point you to other FreePint-published resources that may be of interest, as well as share ResourceShelf resources more broadly.
Second, the new site gives us more flexibility to try different things, offer new features, and get more people involved in ResourceShelf.
Finally, the change in technology will give all of you who receive our weekly reminder newsletter a completely new HTML design. Like the website, the new flexibility will allow us to do a number of new and exciting things moving forward. Stay Tuned!
About the ResourceBlog
For a long time, ResourceShelf was solely the blog content. With the change, ResourceShelf is a site that offers two services: a free blog and a free newsletter.
It’s a simple reminder with a very small taste of what we post each week on the weblog. The biggest challenge for us especially in the past few years is reminding our subscribers that the handful of posts listed in the newsletter is only a small portion of what we post on the blog. If you’ve been subscribing to the ResourceShelf Newsletter in the past, you’ll continue to receive it – share it with your colleagues if you find it useful.
Here’s the collection you know and love: ResourceBlog continues to be updated nearly every day. The types of content that you’ve come to expect from our site ARE NOT going to change. We’re thrilled that so many people find what we do interesting and hopefully, in many cases, useful.
You’ll find a direct link to ResourceBlog (using the maroon color that you're used to) clearly labeled on the page in the middle of the page, as well as a link to our RSS feed (a very popular way to read ResourceShelf) and direct links to the three most recent posts.
Each post can be identified more easily; we also have more posts listed on the first page without making the page longer (aka more scrolling).
At the bottom of the page you’ll see a links to go to the next page of links (reverse chronological order). Also at the bottom of the page you’ll find a link to our archive, or use the link to the archive in the far-right column of each page. Finally, in the same column on the right side of each page, you’ll find links to top categories and all categories.
Finally, at the top of each page, you’ll find a link to search ResourceShelf using a site limited version of Google. We are very pleased that Google updates its index with new ResourceBlog posts within minutes of the time they go live on the web.
We are excited to now be fully integrated into the FreePint Family.
So, that’s our overview.
We hope you like the new look and features.
Of course, your feedback is always welcome.
The past few months have seen a major uptick in new visitors to ResourceShelf. Welcome. For those of you who have been with us a day or a week, or for many years, thank you for your support. What began 9.5 years ago as “something to try” has turned into a resource beyond anything I could ever imagine.
The FreePint Family is a family of resources to help information workers be more effective, raise the value of information in their organisations and contribute to success.
'FreePint... provides most of my professional development because it won't come through work and [other resources] just don't cut it.'
