Resource of the Week: Directories!

Resource of the Week: Directories!
By Shirl Kennedy, Senior Editor

We love directories here on ResourceShelf. Every information professional knows what valuable reference tools they are -- both in print and online. Here are a few that may or may not be new to you:

+ Diplomatic List (U.S. Department of State)

This publication covers foreign missions (embassies, interest sections) in the United States. It contains the names of members of the diplomatic staffs of these missions and their spouses. Members of the diplomatic staff are the members of the staff of the mission having diplomatic rank. These persons, with the exception of those identified by asterisks, enjoy full immunity under provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. The Diplomatic List is prepared by the Office of Protocol.

Issued four times a year. Archives available online back to 1993.

+ International Directory of Finance and Economics Professionals

This is not a directory of finance and economics concepts, but of finance and economics people!

Database incorporates the membership directory of the American Finance Association. There are legal restrictions on the use of this resource:

Permission is hereby granted to any non-commercial entity to use this service to send up to 20 requests per day.
...
By using this service, you agree not to download multiple email addresses for the sake of sending unsolicited email to 10 or more individuals. You furthermore agree not to send more than 20 requests per day to this service.
...
I hereby grant permission to commercial users (who do not fit the above characteristic of a mass-emailing organization) to record the results of no more than one query per day. The purpose and spirit of this restriction is to prevent the building of "spam" email lists from this service.

See link for full restrictions, and see FAQ for additional information.

+ On the academic side: Worldwide Directory of Finance Faculty

Welcome! You can use this directory, jointly sponsored by the Ohio State Department of Finance and the American Finance Association, to locate phone numbers, addresses and home pages of finance faculty and finance professionals worldwide.

Note that you may not use the directory "to create e-mail lists to send bulk e-mails to members of the finance profession."

+ Mandy's Film and TV Production Directory
Includes, among other things:

Scope is international.

+ Facebook: Browse by Name
Most people don't know this page exists. It's cumbersome to use because of the sheer number of Facebook members. And people can opt out of this listing, so it's not foolproof.

Browse for your friends alphabetically by last name. Numbers 1 to 26 contain non-Latin character names.

Note: This only includes people who have Public Search Listings available on Facebook. Anyone can opt out of appearing here by changing their Search privacy settings. You can also find people using our people search page.
