The Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2010 is a major victory for passengers’ rights. Among the law’s many provisions is a requirement that cruise lines report allegations of serious crime incidents to the FBI and that those be available to the public online.
While it could take some time for the government’s Web site to get up and running, the public can get a glimpse of cruise ship incident data at www.sun-sentinel.com/cruisecrime.

Before the new law, the cruise lines only voluntarily agreed to report deaths, assaults, thefts and other incidents to the FBI under a 2007 agreement.
The Sun Sentinel obtained copies of these reports filed from December 2007 through October 2008 and created a searchable database, that makes this information available to the public for the first time. (Other requests for this data remain unfulfilled.) You can search by cruise line, cruise ship or incident type.
When deaths, assaults, thefts and other incidents occur aboard cruise ships, cruise lines file reports with the FBI. The Sun Sentinel obtained copies of reports filed from December 2007 through October 2008. Search our database to see what was reported by each cruise line.
