Resource of the Week -- United Policyholders

Resource of the Week -- United Policyholders
By Shirl Kennedy, Senior Editor

Does even the thought of dealing with insurance companies make you queasy and/or weak in the knees? You're not alone. Thus, we were pleased to stumble across this extremely helpful consumer advocacy site last week.

United Policyholders was founded in 1991 as non-profit tax-exempt organization dedicated to educating the public on insurance issues and consumer rights. Our first major project was working with over a thousand victims of a devastating October, 1991 firestorm in the Oakland/Berkeley, California hills to help them understand their policies and receive prompt, fair insurance claim settlements.

Since that time, UP has provided consumer-oriented insurance education in Florida, Texas, New Mexico, Oregon, and throughout California. Much of our work takes place in communities that have been hit by natural disasters such as hurricanes, wildfires, earthquakes, and floods giving rise to large numbers of insurance claims and resulting consumer confusion and frustration.

What's here? Lots and lots of free helpful brochures, fact sheets and other publications, organized into topical collections, such as:

Since insurance laws are different in every state (as, often, are disaster issues), you'll probably want to take a look at State by State Help, where you'll find a clickable U.S. map. Some resource links are common to all states, while others are state-specific. For five (particularly disaster-prone) states, there are individual "Roadmaps to Recovery":

Also available: a collection of videos on such topics as:

Besides what's available on the site, there's a page of links to additional resources, such as insurance-related blogs, a bibliography of recommended books, a webliography of pointers to relevant government agencies, rating companies, various nonprofits, general insurance information and more assistance for policyholders. You'll also find a link to A.M. Best's extensive Glossary of Insurance Terms.

United Policyholders' Board of Directors is heavy on lawyers, and also includes consumer, insurance and financial professionals.

A lot of the talk around social media in the last year has been around information overload. Social media has provided us with new and exciting ways to create content.
