The beta version of Wolfram|Alpha Widgets is here! What are Wolfram|Alpha Widgets? They’re free, Wolfram|Alpha-powered mini apps that are easy to make, customize, and share on your blog, website, and social networks. And they’re the next step toward our goal of making the vast knowledge and computational power of Wolfram|Alpha available to everyone, everywhere.
Here's a directory of the widgets available right now. As you'll see you can sort the widgets by "Featured," "Top Rated." and "Newest."
But what if you want a specific widget but can't find it in the directory? Create it yourself with the Widget Builder. You will need a Wolfram ID to access but it's a fast and free registration process. You can also customize widgets found in the directory.
Embedding is made easy as is sharing a link to the Widget via one of many social nets and email.
Using and creating W|A widgets is free.
When you consider the amount of curated material (and it's increasing) in Wolfram|Alpha the possibilities are for the most part endless what you and others can created and share. Make sure educators know about this new feature. It could even be a class project to create a widget around something the class is studying.
Here are a few of examples in a variety of categories with annotations from W|A:
"You're cooking and a recipe calls for 8 tablespoons of butter. "Isn't that the same as a 1/4 cup?" you think to yourself. This handy kitchen unit converter can tell you."
"This widget shows the thermodynamic properties of gasses at specified temperature and pressure."
"Gives properties of the various layers of the earth."
"Simple DOF Calculator widget. Would like to find a way to express an input for CoC where user can input camera models or sensor size. Going to see if changing the input field type helps."
"Find earthquakes that occurred in any place around the world, up to past 30 years."

Recently I have found myself cooing over visualisation maps (and heat maps) of health and well being resources. The content rich data is overlayed with mapping technologies, and some interesting themes and patterns are emerging.
A lot of the talk around social media in the last year has been around information overload. Social media has provided us with new and exciting ways to create content. But it has also meant learning new ways to manage and engage with social media tools. Are we teetering on the edge of an information overload precipice?
Information overload is a figment of your imagination. Or a failure of your filter. Or a symptom of your technological submissiveness. Depends on who you ask.
What if you had to sort through 3.5 million articles and social media posts a day and try to pull out the most relevant items for your organisation? What if you then had to cobble it all together into something readable for your top groups and executives in your organisation?
