Research Findings: Trends in Undergraduates' Use of Databases (Poster)

by Loyd Mbabu, University of Michigan

From the Announcement:

This study presents data on the number of undergraduates at the University of Michigan who used a database at least once in the Fall 2009 semester, including their academic level, school or college affiliation, [Our Emphasis] and the top twelve databases used.

Source: Association of Research Libraries

Note: We Found the List of Top Databases Interesting and a Bit Surprising. Knowing when the research was conducted would be helpful.

1) What database or databases does ProQuest refer to?

2) OAIster, Now Part of OCLC

While the old OAIster homepage redirects to the new OCLC page, finding the actual search interface can be a challenge via OCLC vs. the old homepage unless the searcher knows they can also find the records via WorldCat.org. Of course, narrowing a set to only OAISTER records could also present a problem for some.

3) Mirlyn
We're wondering what, if any differences, the new VuFind "discovery" layer made and if it was used.

4) We would have thought Google Scholar would have ranked higher especially with the direct links.

5) Two Wilson Databases Were in the Top 12. Wow!
