Two reports to share today. It's always interesting to read and watch how libraries are reported on not only in large cities but in smaller cities in towns. Here are two television news reports with video available.
Just released data from Amazon reveals they’re selling 80 percent more downloaded e-books than they are hardcover books, which calls into question the relevance of local public libraries.
“A number of years ago when we had audio and video cassettes coming out and being put in the library collections, people questioned whether that was where public money should be spent and they’ve become really an integral part of library collections. I think it’s an evolution. I don’t see print going away anytime soon,” Mora says.
For college students like Dorothy Ackerman, libraries are more than just a place for books.
“I think they’re still important, like people like me who are going to school, they’re good for research and just a quiet place to study and stuff,” she says.
While e-books are not currently offered at the Great Falls Public Library, plans are underway for them to debut later this year.
With the popularity of electronic books, and budget cuts a very real possibility, Marathon County Public Libraries are working to stay ahead of the technology curve.
The 8-libraries in marathon county have a 2010 budget of just more than 3-point-6-miillion dollars, that's down from last year.
Despite the budget reduction, the libraries had a record year in 2009--with more than 1-million items checked out.
The Marathon County Public Library in Wausau offers downloadable e-books for customers with handheld devices and they offer a free high speed internet connection, along with a large selection of d-v-d's and c-d's.
