Resource Discovery and the Library Catalog: VuFind Releases Version 1.0, Beta is Over

What is VuFind?

"An open source resource discovery layer" that runs "underneath" ILS technology. VuFind is being developed and maintained at the Falvey Memorial Library at Villanova University.

The goal of VuFind is to enable your users to search and browse through all of your library's resources by replacing the traditional OPAC to include:

* Catalog Records
* Digital Library Items
* Institutional Repository
* Institutional Bibliography
* Other Library Collections and Resources

From the VuFind Web Site on 1.0 Release:

In addition to improved stability, the new release includes several features missing from the previous release candidate: flexible support for non-MARC metadata formats, a mobile interface, Dewey Decimal support, integration with Serials Solutions' Summon, and more!

Primary Features Include:

+ Faceted Results [Hooray!]

+ Send Individual Results via SMS or E-Mail

+ Zotero Compatible

Social Features Include:

+ Commenting Function for Each Record

+ Tagging

+ Outside Comment (For Example, Reviews from Amazon, Author Bios)

+ Save Selected Items to List

+ Ability to Browse for Resources

Because the software is open source institutions can create and modify VuFind.
