Donald Delauter, Special Assistant to the Deputy Director at the Institute of Museum & Library Services (IMLS) talked with C-SPAN on June 28, 2010 during the ALA Annual Conference.

In this 7 minute, 45 second presentation, Mr. Delauter says that the IMLS is the, "principal source of federal funding for libraries and museums."

They cover a lot of ground during such a short span of time and Mr. Delauter does a nice job quickly but clearly explaining a lot of material very short time.

Some of the topics covered include:

+ The job of IMLS to make grants

+ LSTA (Library Services and Technology Act), about $160 million/year

+ Grants to States Program and how the money gets distributed

+ Competitive grant programs, funding ratio at about 30%
Low $20 million to institutions for library education (recruitment of students at all levels, leadership programs, research)

+ Grant reviews are done using a peer review process

+ Native American/Native Hawaiian Grant Programs

+ Budget will remain level funded for the next couple of years

+ IMLS staff is about 70 people
