Update to Recent Post: Google's Digitization of Print Materials Dates Back to 2001; Amazon.com Digitizing Restaurant Menus in 2002

The other day we posted an item that shared some dates and background about Google's digitization efforts. We concluded the post with a mention of Google Print that began in 2003.

However, the more we have thought about the 2003 date, the more that we decided it being inaccurate. Google's digitization efforts began even before that. Do you remember Google Catalogs? The database allowed users to search/browse thousands of mail order catalogs. The service began during December, 2001 with a database of approximately 600 catalogs and ended sometime in 2003 or 2004 with more than 6,000 catalogs in the database.

Google wasn't the only "big name" digitizing print material in 2002. On May 31st, Amazon.com began digitizing restaurant menus (for six cities) and making them searchable. Here's a copy of the Amazon Restaurants homepage from November, 2002.
