Milestones: It's 10x10 at Elsevier's ScienceDirect (10 Years Online & 10 Millionth Database Addition)

Tomorrow (or Today) depending where in the world your accessing ResourceShelf from at this hour, ScienceDirect (SD) from Elsevier is celebrating its tenth anniversary. Elsevier says that SD became "fully operational" in 2000 when, "it surpassed one million articles and launched its backfiles initiative, adding literature published prior to 1994." So SD has actually been around longer.

Here's the ScienceDirect homepage from December 6, 2001 and from December 6, 1998 before the official launch with about 700,000 articles in the database.

In addition to the decade online, ScienceDirect is also celebrating the ten millionth addition to the database.

As you know, SD includes both articles (full text) and book chapters.

Here's a Brief Science Direct Chronology:

+ 2000 – Becomes fully operational with one million articles; Implements cross-publisher linking via CrossRef, offering linking to over 10,000 journals.

+ 2003 –Achieves full compliance with the international COUNTER Code of Practice for Journals and Databases.[1]

+ 2007 – Launches first eBooks offering with 4,000 titles published from 1995 on.

+ 2009 – Opens up to third-party developers such as NextBio to build applications for search and discovery on ScienceDirect.

+ 2010 – Links ScienceDirect articles to specialized database content such as PANGAEA for earth research.

And for you info industry/online database history buffs...

The ten millionth full-text article added to database was: Use of Herbal Products and Potential Interactions in Patients With Cardiovascular Diseases, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, authored by A. Tachjian, V. Maria, A. Jahangir from the Division of Cardiovascular Disease, Mayo Clinic, Rochester and the Mayo Clinic, Scottsdale, USA.

Finally, the Top 25 Hottest Articles dbase from ScienceDirect can be both useful and interesting. It provides a look at the articles being downloaded the most on SD by subject areas and by journal journal titles.

For example, in Business, Management, and Accounting the most downloaded article from January, 2010 to March, 2010 was, "Users of the world, unite! The challenges and opportunities of Social Media" in Business Horizons; Volume 53, Issue 1, January 2010, Pages 59-68; by Kaplan, A.M.; Haenlein, M.

Finally, many of the articles in the Top 25 Articles rankings include citation counts from the Scopus (free) database
