Text a $10 Donation to Support the New York Public Library; Facing "Harshest" Budget Cut in Its History

The Digital Library Blog from OverDrive tweeted a message this afternoon about a simple and quick way to support NYPL with a $10 donation to support and help save NYPL from a massive budget cut of $37 million.

Simply Txt NYPL to 27722 and $10 will be added to your wireless bill or deducted from your prepaid wireless card. This page has details about the actual donation.

We've expressed our views several times (see below) on why it's important for all of us to support the New York Public Library not having to cut a devastating $37 million dollars from its budget. Of course, all info pros and VENDORS should do what they can to support ALL libraries having to deal or possibly deal with budget cuts. But New York City being New York City perhaps magnifies the NYPL situation to a national level or even international level because of the massive amount of global media based in NYC.

This ResourceShelf post includes a transcript of NYPL President, Paul LeClerc's June 4, 2010 prepared testimony before several New York City Council Committees. We also share a few of the reasons why we think a $37 million dollar cut could possibly be felt by many libraries (big and small) around the country.

Finally, a reminder that it's not only a troubling scene at the NYPL, but also at other NYC area libraries. The Brooklyn Public Library might have to deal with a $20.6 million cut. The Queens Borough Public Library faces a $16.9 million budget cut and on the other side of the Hudson River, all New Jersey public libs are facing a 74% statewide budget cut.
