Video Via C-SPAN: Selected BookExpo America Industry Panels & Author Talks and Google Editions Event

If you were unable to attend BookExpo America in NYC or attended and were unable to see a favorite author or two, perhaps C-SPAN, C-SPAN 2, and the C-SPAN Video Library can help.

From now (4:30 EST, Saturday) until 7am EST on Sunday, C-SPAN 2 is airing author talks, interviews with publishers about their new book lists (between scheduled events), and a couple of industry panels. All of these events took place a couple of weeks ago in NYC at BookExpo America, 2010.

The schedule is available here.

Depending on when you read this post, live now is a panel titled, "The Next Decade in Book Culture - Effects of E-Book Reading Devices" The panel will re-air at 6am EST, Sunday.

But don't let time be an issue. Watch it whenever you like. Keep reading.

All of these events are already available by using the amazing C-SPAN Video Library database where you can search and/or browse and then view online just about every C-SPAN program/event back to 1987, approx. 160,000 hours of programming. We've mentioned this educational, important, and for many disciplines, essential resource several times on ResourceShelf since it debuted online in mid-March of this year.

In most cases, a text transcript comes along with the video. If you haven't used or "played" with this database, it's MORE THAN worth a look.

The price? Free.

For example, the May 4th BISG / Publisher's Weekly event where Google Editions was formally introduced (and of course widely reported and discussed upon it's conclusion) is available via the C-SPAN Video Library.

The 90 minute event and a transcript is available here.

Andrew Albanese from Publisher's Weekly was the moderator.
Panelists: Chris Palma, Google
Evan Schnittman, Oxford University Press
and Richard Curtis.

The 2010 BEA Panel: "The Next Decade in Book Culture - Effects of E-Book Reading Devices" is already accessible from the C-SPAN Video Library.

The panelists include, Jane Ciabattari, president, National Book Critics Circle, Carolyn Kellogg, book blogger, The Los Angeles Times, Denise Oswald, editorial director, Soft Skull Press, Nicholas Latimore, director of publicity, Knopf, Ed Nawotka, founder and editor-in-chief, PublishingPerspectives.com, and Kate Travers, marketing and media consultant. The panel is moderated by John Reed, books editor, Brooklyn Rail.

It runs about one hour.

Finally, the one other 2010 BEA panel that C-SPAN is airing with a focus on the publishing the industry will re-air on C-SPAN at 2am EST, Sunday.

But, once again, watch when you have time. This CEO panel is titled: "The Value of a Book"

The panelists included, David Shanks, chief executive officer, Penguin Group (USA), Inc, Skip Prichard, chief executive officer, Ingram Content Group Inc, Oren Teicher, chief executive officer, American Booksellers Association, Bob Miller, group publisher, Workman Publishing, Esther Newberg, executive vice president, International Creative Management, and Scott Turow, author and incoming president, Authors Guild. The event was moderated by Jonathan Galassi, president, Farrar, Straus and Giroux.

The video and transcript is available from the video library.
This event runs 90 minutes.

Finally, here's a brief "Howcast" about searching the C-SPAN Video Library. It just scratches the service but it's a good place to begin. Power searches should also take advantage of the advanced interface that makes use of a lot of the metadata associated with each entry.

A lot of the talk around social media in the last year has been around information overload. Social media has provided us with new and exciting ways to create content. But it has also meant learning new ways to manage and engage with social media tools. Are we teetering on the edge of an information overload precipice?
