New from Google and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office: Bulk Download Patents and Trademark Files

As many of you already know, in December, 2006, Google launched Google Patent Search that allows users search for all patents and patent applications back to 1790. In numbers, that's about seven million patents and one million patent applications. New patents and patent apps are added every few months. Note: It would be useful if Google would place a "current up to..." date on the home page. That small amount of info could save the searcher some time. The original blog post mentions the seven million number and the FAQ notes that GOOG would like to expand into international patents. This expansion has been mentioned since the very beginning.

What' NEW Today (aka What Was Once Fee-Based is Now Free)(

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and Google announced that its now possible for the public (free of charge) to download bulk, electronic files of patent and trademark material. It's a no-cost (Google is hosting for free), two year deal.

This bulk data can be accessed at:
http://www.google.com/googlebooks/uspto.html.

[Snip]

Until now, USPTO’s public data in bulk form has been provided solely as a fee-based service. The USPTO estimates that nearly ten terabytes of information will be made available. Examples of the type of data that will be available through Google include:

* Patent grants and published applications

* Trademark applications

* Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB) proceedings

* Patent classification information

* Patent maintenance fee events

* Patent and Trademark assignments

The USPTO and Google will be working together to make additional data available in the future, including patent and trademark file histories and related data.

We're wondering if Google Trademark Search is coming soon. Stay Tuned.

From the Article:

... as the USPTO put it in its press release: "This arrangement is to serve as a bridge as the USPTO develops an acquisition strategy which will allow the USPTO to enter into a contract with a contractor to retrieve and distribute USPTO patent and trademark bulk public data.")

Advocates can take on the role of sherpa, leading government where it needs to go. In the SEC's case, it was Malamud. In the USPTO's case, it might prove to be Google.
