A Belated Happy First Birthday to Bing; Microsoft's Search Engine Celebrates One Year

Bing has done some very impressive things during the past year. We weren't sure at first but Visual Search is useful and yes, even fun. We have always loved Bing Maps/Virtual Earth Maps and the "Bird's Eye" imagery continues to get oohs and aahs when you demo it. The gallery of map apps also has plenty of cool tools. One of our favorites is an app to place live traffic cameras on top of maps for certain metro areas. To get to the apps gallery, go to this page and at the bottom of the first column (on the right), look for Map Apps button.

Finally (for now), Bing continues to improve their video search and image databases that do a job equal, if not in many cases better to what competitors offer.

Our hope is that news search is the next area that they tackle.

The article includes many positive comments re: Bing and makes a point that we agree with. The challenge is not only offering innovative and useful technology but also getting users to first take a look and then provide what they want/need/like keep coming back. So, it's tech and marketing working together. In fact, in some situations marketing might be even more important.

You can preview a few seconds of video results without having to click.

1) Run a video search. Here's an example.

2) Now, you should see a page of results (thumbnails). Cursor over a thumbnail that might be of interest. Wait about a second and you should now see the video begin to play with audio.

Note from Gary: A few weeks ago we were driving into a new area. Some map and directions (from several providers) had accurate could have been better (more direct). The Bing App for iPhone was right on the money in terms of accuracy of maps, directions and interaction with the iPhone's GPS.
