Mobile Web Site from McGill University Library in Montreal Officially Launches
It was almost ONE month ago when we posted about a beta release of a mobile web site from the McGill University Library in Montreal. Word today that the site has just been officially released. It can be accessed on most smarthphones and devices (iPhone, iTouch, IPad, and most smartphones). You can also take a look to get a fee for the site from most web browsers.
It appears that our May post is still valid and the McGill Library team is off to a great start.
Three things we expect to see updated or added in the next few months:
1) A bit more description/instruction after clicking the catalogue search icon.
It does read "enter your search terms in the search box" but perhaps a bit more about what you are and are not searching.
2) Ability to search serial/journal databases from the mobile interface
3) The news page is a great idea and MicGill seems to make use of it on a regular basis. However, some of the links do not go to sites optimized for mobile devices. For example, on May 14, 2020 it mentions that McGill now has a trial of Oxford Bibliographies Online.
The first click forward takes you to a mobile optimized page with a link to "read the full article." The next click with more info and then another click to the actual user interface are NOT optimized for mobile. A note at the outset saying that not all trials and other sources listed on the news page are mobile friendly would be useful.
This paragraph from the May review still is complete accurate. The site looks great.
In terms of overall look, we loved it! The colors selection looked great in the Safari mobile browser and adding images for each library building (see above) is a nice touch. The icons on the homepage are also nicely done.
