A new website has been launched that communicates essential information about America’s energy situation, based on the vast holdings of reports from the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, and the National Research Council. A finalist for a Webby Award in the category of science, “What You Need to Know About Energy” (www.needtoknow.nas.edu provides an overview of our current energy system and covers four main topics: energy uses, sources of energy, the cost of energy (in terms of the environment, national security, and sustainability), and energy efficiency.
"What You Need to Know About Energy" offers reliable, objective, and authoritative information about this complex topic. Geared toward a nonscientific audience, the site is drawn extensively from high quality reports and presents important information in an accessible format. Easy-to-navigate content and links to source material provide rich opportunities to deepen knowledge and promote understanding. “What You Need to Know About Energy” includes an energy quiz, a glossary, and a source library. Producers of the site are also developing curriculum-based materials for high school and middle school classrooms.
