Statistics About eBooks For Sale in Apple's iBookstore

Teleread.org points us to a number of interesting statistics that O'Reilly Radar published about eBooks for sale in the iBookstore.

From the Post:

Measured in terms of number of titles, half of the over 46,000 (paid and free) books available through the iBooks app are from 6 categories. Fiction & Literature alone account for close to a third of all available iBooks titles:

Here is market share for a few (of the many) categories of books:

+ Mysteries and Thrillers
6.0%

+ Historical
3.0%

+ Literary
1.4%

+ Business and Personal Finance
1.2%

+ Politics & Current Events
1.2%

+ Children's Non-Fiction
0.8%

Many additional categories are listed.

There are over a hundred iBooks categories, the charts only contains the top 25.

Share by Publisher: A Few Examples

+ Penguin
23.5%

+ Simon & Schuster
19%

+ Harper Collins
15.9%

+ Lulu.com
1.6%

+ Palgrave Macmillan
0.5%

Additional publishers are listed.

Mean Price by Category: A Few Examples

+ Fiction and Literature
$10.14

+ History
$13.46

+ Sci-Fi and Fantasy
$7.84

+ Health and Fitness
$7.84

+ Poetry
$11.47

Important Point by Ben Lorica

The current set of titles is indicative of the publishers (and/or imprints) that Apple reached out to prior to the launch of the iPad, so expect the mix of iBooks titles to change over the next few months, as more publishers make their titles available through iBooks.

Research was done between April 15th and April 26th.
