In a letter sent today to the Administrator of the General Services Administration, POGO highlighted irregularities in federal contract spending data that call into question the integrity of the USAspending.gov database. These irregularities include subsidiaries being listed independently of their parent companies, companies being assigned multiple rankings, and even a bizarre listing called "Government of the United States."
POGO's General Counsel Scott Amey commented that "no matter how vigorously the Administration promotes openness, it must also ensure that the data is accurate. The upgrades to the system have been constructive, but obvious errors involving the largest federal contractors have shaken our trust in the system."
Since 2008, POGO has used the USAspending.gov top 100 contractor list for compiling its Federal Contractor Misconduct Database, which includes criminal, civil, and administrative cases, as well as investigative findings on the top 100-plus federal contractors. USAspending.gov Version 2.0 is coming soon, and POGO hopes that any features added to the database are supplemented with data quality checks.
