Search by Color Using Chromatik Search from Exalabs

In February, we posted what turned out to be a popular item about a "search by colour" demo available from the National Library of Australia.

So, how does another search by color demo sound? Like the demo from NLA, this is also a demonstration project.

Here's one that can could be both useful and rather fun. The kids might even like it.

Today it's time for Chromatik, from Exalabs (part of Exalead).

1. Start by picking a color from the chart

2. Adjust the proportions (how much color) or add more color(s).

3. Next, luminosity, light or dark images?

4. Saturation from colorful to gray-scale

5. Finally, you can (optional) be an "old school" searcher with keywords and then focus your search with the color tools.

Here's an example: A search for the word "airplane." We first selected colors, dealt with luminosity and saturation, and quickly and easily had an excellent set of images. Btw, if you look at the top of the image box, you'll see what percentage of the colors you selected are being used. You can choose many colors and adjust with the adjustment bar.

No, it's not perfect but it works fairly well and we like the ease of use factor.

You'll be up and running in 3-5 minutes.
