Earth Day 2010: Ten Selected Research and Reference Resources

We hope all of you, no matter where you are, will be able to make the most of this special and important day. Happy 40th Earth Day!

Here Are a Few Resources that Might be of Interest to
You, Your Colleagues, and Others.

1) An Earth Day History (via Wise Guide, Library of Congress)

The page begins with a info about Sen. Gaylord Nelson (D-Wisc.), "considered one of the leaders of the modern environmental movement, developed the idea for Earth Day after being inspired by the anti-Vietnam-War "teach-ins" that were taking place on college campuses around the United States."

2. A Bio of Sen. Gaylord Nelson from the Notable Names Database

A much MORE in-depth bio compared to the one listed above. Facts and more facts from this very useful text-based biographical database. It's worth a look now for future research. Also (and this is very cool), in the upper-left corner look for top gray box with the name, "Gaylord Nelson." Click it. A Java app should open and you'll be able to visualize relationships between Sen. Nelson and others. Don't be afraid to click around and use the "drop down" boxes to change the visualization. Cool. Over 30,000 people in the database. Bottom Line? VERY COOL!!!

3. Database: Earth Trends

EarthTrends is a comprehensive online database, maintained by the World Resources Institute, that focuses on the environmental, social, and economic trends that shape our world.

4. Earth Day Science Guide (via Science Division, Library of Congress)

Sections include:
+ General
+ Living and working sustainably
+ Ecosystems: climatology and weather
+ Ecosystems: flora and fauna
+ Geography and geology
+ For Students
and Much More

Note: On a somewhat related note, LC recently released a new Science Tracer Bullet (aka guide) that focuses on resources for science fair projects.

5. Images of Earth from Space (NASA, The Internet Archive)

A selection of images of Earth taken space by NASA over the years. We've limited this collection to only images of Earth from space. However, you can easily focus the results or change the collection by making selections from the left column. These images come from from the NASAimages.org database which comes from a partnership between NASA and the Internet Archive. This image was taken on August 23, 1966. We've also included several images from the labeled "Earthrise." We could look at these for hours.

6. Searchable/Browsable: Terms of Environment: Glossary, Abbreviations and Acronyms (via EPA)

7. Environmental News Network (Updated Throughout the Day) (via ENN)

8. Database: DSIRE

DSIRE is a comprehensive source of information on state, local, utility and federal incentives and policies that promote renewable energy and energy efficiency. Established in 1995 and funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, DSIRE is an ongoing project of the N.C. Solar Center and the Interstate Renewable Energy Council.

9. Greendex (via National Geographic Society)

National Geographic and the international polling firm GlobeScan have just conducted their second annual study measuring and monitoring consumer progress toward environmentally sustainable consumption in 17 countries around the world.

This quantitative consumer study of 17,000 consumers in a total of 17 countries (14 in 2008) asked about such behavior as energy use and conservation, transportation choices, food sources, the relative use of green products versus traditional products, attitudes towards the environment and sustainability, and knowledge of environmental issues.

10. United Nations Environmental Indicators (via UN Statistics)
