Canada: A Massive Collection of Games Heading to Museum of Civilization

From an Article:

For nearly 40 years, a small museum tucked away at the University of Waterloo boasted one of the world’s largest collections of games.

Card, board or electronic, mass-produced or handcrafted, historic or modern, from Canada and Europe, Africa and Asia — all had a home in the unique collection founded by Elliott Avedon, a former professor in the department of recreation and leisure studies.

As the Museum and Archive of Games — later renamed in honour of Avedon, who retired in 1995 — grew and opened to the public, it was run primarily by graduate and co-op students, under faculty supervision. But as retirement thinned the ranks of those closest to the collection — and with no obvious choice to pick up the reins — the university decided last year to close the doors.

Now, the collection has found a new home at one of Canada’s national treasures, the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Quebec.

For the Time Being: www.gamesmuseum.uwaterloo.ca will remain online. This site contains a list of the U of Waterloo collection with additional info, papers about games; an FAQ; and more.
