Up to Six Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library Branches Could Close

From an Article:

Closing those branches and laying off workers would turn a budget deficit into a slight surplus, according to a report presented on Thursday to a committee of the library board.

[Snip]

Budget Situation
+ Maintain Current Situation-Leads to a $1.5 Million Dollar Deficit
+ A Deficit Would Still Occur if Closing 2-4 Branches Would Take Place
+ Closing Six Branches Would Provide a $220,896 Surplus

Additionally, 55 workers could lose jobs while everyone elese would move to a 37.5 hour work week

The library has 22 branches plus the Downtown's Central Library, which opened in a new building in December 2007, and 700 employees.

+ Brightwood
+ Fountain Square
+ Flanner HouseSpades Park
+ West Indianapolis

See Also: "The Sustainable Library Project" on the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Web Site contains library finance data, a chart listing options, and meeting dates.

It begins with the following statement:

We have reached the point where our financial resources do not meet the pace of our growth. Cost reductions and changes have been implemented over the past 10 years to save money and increase efficiencies, but they are not enough to meet the loss of revenue we are facing from reductions in property tax revenue and lowered property values.
