Packaging Info Sources For Sale: WSJ + Factiva = WSJ Pro
Here's the latest from Murdoch and company.
After WSJ Pro Enterprise launched last November, we were told that WSJ Pro Consumer was coming in January. It launched today.
In a nutshell, WSJ Pro for the consumer (as opposed to the Enterprise version) combines The Wall Street Journal Online (and its features) and 17,000 publications from Factiva (a subset of the 28,000 sources available at Factiva.com) that can be searched or browsed using Factiva's SmartSearch technology.
Of course, there are a bunch of personalization features (e.g. the homepage) from the WSJ Online.
News Alerts, as would be expected, are available.
Wall St. Journal Pro costs $49/month or $588/year.
There is a one year archive of both Factiva and WSJ content. We're going to confirm this.
“The competitive advantage offered by being able to quickly and thoroughly access and analyze information from literally thousands of resources is an exciting prospect for our business and for our users.”
--Todd Larsen, President, Dow Jones & Company
"Users will be able to access this service without being tethered to a clunky terminal."
--Robert Thomson, Editor-in-Chief, Dow Jones & Company, and Managing Editor, The Wall Street Journal
Quick Comment
Re: Mr. Thomson and his "tethered and clunky terminal."
Where has he been? What tool is he talking about? The WSJ Online and Factiva can be accessed from just about any computer with an Internet connection. From notebook to laptop to the iPhone/iTouch/iPad. Perhaps there are a few services for professional Dow Jones services that require a "clunky terminal" (hey, it's 2010 and still clunky?) but we've used both services from unclucky and untethered computers.
This page and the materials linked to it will provide you with much more information including a self-guided demo and screen images of various parts of the WSJ Pro site.
For more info, take a look at this article by Barbara Quint. It's an Info Today NewsBreak from November, 2009 and offers an in-depth look at WSJ Pro Enterprise. After reading about WSJ Pro Consumer it seems most of the features along with the price are the same.

Recently I have found myself cooing over visualisation maps (and heat maps) of health and well being resources. The content rich data is overlayed with mapping technologies, and some interesting themes and patterns are emerging.
A lot of the talk around social media in the last year has been around information overload. Social media has provided us with new and exciting ways to create content. But it has also meant learning new ways to manage and engage with social media tools. Are we teetering on the edge of an information overload precipice?
Information overload is a figment of your imagination. Or a failure of your filter. Or a symptom of your technological submissiveness. Depends on who you ask.
What if you had to sort through 3.5 million articles and social media posts a day and try to pull out the most relevant items for your organisation? What if you then had to cobble it all together into something readable for your top groups and executives in your organisation?
