Photographers and Artists Groups File Lawsuit Against Google Re: Google Books

It's official. The lawsuit that was a possibility in the Financial Times article we posted last night has been filed in New York City.

From Bloomberg:

The groups that filed the complaint today seek class- action, or group status to sue Google, the world’s most popular Internet search engine, on behalf of visual artists and individuals.

The suit in federal court in New York was filed after a judge in Manhattan rejected the artists’ request to be part of a proposed $125 million settlement that Google reached with authors in connection with its plan to make digital copies of books in libraries.

The suit was filed on behalf of the American Society of Media Photographers, the Graphic Artists Guild, the Picture Archive Council of America, the North American Nature Photography Association and the Professional Photographers of America. Individuals named as plaintiffs include Leif Skoogfors, who’s known for combat photos, and Simms Taback, an illustrator of children’s books.

“We are confident that Google Books is fully compliant with international copyright law,” Gabriel Stricker, a Google spokesman, said in an e-mailed statement. Google Books “exposes readers to information they might not otherwise see, and it provides authors and publishers with a new way to be found.”
