In keeping with his request that state agencies trim their budgets by 5 percent in the next fiscal year, Gov. Joe Manchin has used a line item veto to reduce the state allocation to public libraries [97 library systems} by $417,444.
That might not sound like much on the surface, but libraries depend almost exclusively on government money. They generate very little revenue on their own.
Federal grants are also expected to decrease somewhat in the upcoming year.
Some libraries are considering closing for one day a week. Others are dropping full-time positions in favor of part-time slots that don't carry the added expense of retirement and health benefits. Book and computer software purchases also are being scaled back.
