Bowker Adds Several New Features to Syndetics, View Movie Trailers from the OPAC and More

We're looking forward to seeing the following in action, especially the video.

Today, Bowker (a unit of ProQuest) announced at the Public Library Association Conference in Portland, OR that several new features were being added to their OPAC enhancement tool, Syndetics.

What's New?

[Syndetics] now enables libraries to provide video clips [including movie/video trailers], book reviews from The New York Times and searchable fiction profiles to their users through their OPACs.

Syndetics users’ OPACs will now include book reviews from The New York Times, along with Searchable Fiction Profiles [that] will integrate reader’s advisory within the catalog. Users can discover their next book by linking through character profiles, genre, topics, setting, and time period related to their favorite titles. More than 100,000 book profiles are available, primarily across fiction, but also for nonfiction and children’s books. Finally, DVD selection becomes more compelling with integrated video trailers for more than 35,000 U.S. and international movies and television shows.

Syndetics has been around for a while (they were acquired by Bowker in 2004) and you can see the various "enrichment data" the offer by looking/clicking in the box on the right side of any page on their web site. The box is labeled "enrichment options."

Finally, of the new material being made available today, we find the movie/video trailers to be an excellent idea. The ability to watch the trailers directly from the OPAC should be easy enough for most people. In many cases, being able to get an idea of what the film is about can (in the long run) can save everyone time and allow users to view the type of content that they're interested in. That should make everyone happy.

Will the trailers be customized for a libraries collection or will all trailers be available?

While all trailers are approved for all audiences, will a Syndetics user be able to limit who sees what trailer? Will libraries be able to request trailers or other video content to put into the system so it's OPAC accessible?
