New Online Database & Portal: AidData (Beta), Comprehensive Source of Global Development & Emergency Aid Info

From an Alertnet Article:

A new online information portal on aid flows around the world will improve transparency, helping fight the misuse of billions of dollars of aid, academics and aid officials said this week at the launch of the tool.

AidData (Beta) pulls together facts and figures from existing databases, donors' documents, online resources and insights gleaned from direct contacts between its creators and donors. Participants at a conference to showcase the portal described it as the most comprehensive source of information on global development and emergency aid to date.

For example, existing data captures only 39 percent of aid given to Mauritania in 2007 while AidData can provide a much fuller picture, said Rob Hicks, an associate professor of economics at the U.S.-based College of William and Mary who has helped build the new tool.

"Transparency is crucial," said Daniel Kaufmann, a senior researcher on global economy and development at the Brookings Institution in the United States

The creators of AidData, funded by the Gates Foundation and the Hewlett Foundation, opened the portal to the public on Tuesday but continue to improve it and are inviting feedback from users.

For now, AidData contains information only on aid donated by governments and multilateral groups like the World Bank but in the future it will also include aid flows from non-governmental and private organisations.

The portal contains facts and figures on development and humanitarian projects, including all grants and loans committed by major donors. It allows users to export search results into Excel files and share them via email and social networking tools such as Facebook and Twitter.
