Reports of the printed word's demise have been grossly exaggerated, at least according to the latest statistics from the Calgary Public Library.
Library cardholders continued their record-breaking habits in 2009, plowing through a 2008 high by signing out more than 16 million items.
It's an impressive milestone for the 17 branches across the city, but particularly when looking at the library's level of funding. The Calgary library receives as little as half the per-capita funding of any other major public library in the country, says Grant Kaiser, manager of marketing and development.

...these numbers make Calgary the second-busiest library district in Canada and the sixth busiest district in North America, behind only Toronto, Queens, New York, Los Angeles and Brooklyn.

According to stats, 65 per cent of the items borrowed were print materials, 24 per cent were DVDs and 11 per cent were CDs, e-books and audio books.
