Congratulations to All of Our Friends at the "Award Winning" Internet Archive

Ås we've said many times we are big fans of all of the work Brewster, Peter, and the rest of the team at the Internet Archive in San Francisco.

Last Saturday evening, the Internet Archive received the Project of Social Benefit Award from the Free Software Foundation.

IA Founder, Brewster Kahle, was at the presentation and said:

"We are trying to follow in the footsteps of the the free software movement and apply these ideas to the cultural materials layer, building organizations that are founded on these principals."

Since the Internet Archive provides access to so much content, It sometimes is forgotten that while The Wayback Machine has become an ESSENTIAL tool for conducting Internet research, it's only part of what they do.

Consider the Text Archive where full text books are being digitized at locations around the world and then made available to search, find and access. Soon the Text Archive will have over 2 million books in its collection.

Consider the Live Music Archive and Audio Archive.
Just about 76,000 concerts archived and ready to listen enjoy. Plus, over 500,000 audio files, from radio shows to book and poetry readings.

The Moving Image Archive (one of our favorite IA resources) is home to over 250k films that can be viewed online or downloaded.

Finally, the Software Archive with about 33,000 files.

All of this content is freely available.

An additional service that's worth mentioning is Archive-It. This fee-based service will help any organization permanently archive their web content.

Finally, don't forget about the BookServer technology that the IA is developing.

The BookServer is a growing open architecture for vending and lending digital books over the Internet. Built on open catalog and open book formats, the BookServer model allows a wide network of publishers, booksellers, libraries, and even authors to make their catalogs of books available directly to readers through their laptops, phones, netbooks, or dedicated reading devices.

Again, congrats to the entire IA team. Keep up the great and important work.
