Sunshine Week is a national initiative to open a dialogue about the importance of open government and freedom of information. Participants include print, broadcast and online news media, civic groups, libraries, nonprofits, schools and others interested in the public’s right to know.
Sunshine Week is led by the American Society of News Editors and is funded primarily by a challenge grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation of Miami.
Our post contained a bunch of resources including Cryptome (a place to turn to when a gov doc is taken offline + much more) and the Government Attic to see materials acquired using the Freedom of Information Act and also learn how to use FOIA to obtain documents.
Through the new site, citizens will be able to access detailed information on state expenditures, track grant awards, review public facilities’ inspection reports, including those for schools, hospitals and nursing homes; and much more.
Governor Quinn launched the Illinois Sunshine Project last March as a part of his fiscal year 2010 budget. New features will be continually added to the Illinois Sunshine Portal moving forward.
