FCC Continues To Note Libraries’ Role in Ensuring Access to Broadband, Offering Public Assistance

Marijke Visser, an Information Technology Policy Analyst at the ALA Writes:

John Horrigan, consumer research director at the Federal Communications’ Commission (FCC), says the recently released Social Science Research Council report “Broadband Adoption in Low-Income Communities,” found that many non-adopters of broadband lack the skills to carry out online tasks such as applying for a job – which places great strain on public libraries whose staff often serve as the de facto help desk.

Librarians serving communities across the country know this firsthand, and ALA continues to be encouraged by the support and recognition the FCC is showing for our nation’s libraries. Such statements indicate that the FCC understands that libraries must be included in federal efforts to boost levels of broadband adoption in the United States.
