Springfield Township, PA: Library Copes with Budget Cuts as Use Rises While State Legislators Get Valentines Day Cards

From the Article:

Visitors to the Free Library of Springfield Township celebrated the Valentine’s Day by showing state legislators how much they love their library.

In a two-week period beginning Feb. 2, they signed a total of about 300 valentines to Rep. Larry Curry, D-154, and Sen. Vince Hughes, D-7, asking them to restore previously cut library funding in the 2010-2011 budget.

The library took a hit Jan. 31 when it lost access to the online database EBSCOhost, which provides databases of full text journal articles, newspapers and magazines. The commonwealth library’s subscription to EBSCOhost ended Jan. 31, and there was no money to renew it for the rest of the year, McGarvey said.

The library still has access to some databases, but the scope is more limited, she said. The issue is important because the databases give people access to materials that have been checked for accuracy, McGarvey added.

In addition to the loss of databases, the library might have to cut back on its materials budget, which includes books, movies, magazines, computer replacement and equipment maintenance, McGarvey said.
