The ipl2 Beta is Now Online, It's the New Directory Resulting from Merger of the IPL and LII

The transition that will see two of the web most useful resources and a great illustration or how librarians can help gather, annotate, and organize the web is underway. The merger of the Internet Public Library and the Librarians' Internet Index is underway. The new service is named ipl2 and has the motto, "information you can trust." We like it.

You can take a peek at ipl2 (Beta) at IPL2.org. IPL.org and LII.org also show the new page. It's important to note that between now and January 4, 2010, the "website will have periods of unavailability."

We'll save a more thorough overview for the official launch but right now you can see that the home page is divided into several categories:

At the Top Right: Ask an ipl2 Librarian
+ Resources by Subject which leads to this page. Nice.
+ Magazines and Newspapers
+ Special Collections Created by ipl2
(The POTUS (Presidents of the United States) Collection, a Massive List of Associations, and Much More Can Be Accessed in this Section
+ Sites for Kids
+ Sites for Teens

Every entry show a magnifying glass. Click it to find the full metadata. Here's an example.

The primary partners, as listed on the home page, of ipl2 are:

+ The iSchool at Drexel U.
+ Florida State University School of Library and Information Science
+ U. of Illinois, Graduate School of Library and Information Science
+ U. of Pittsburgh, School of Information Sciences
+ School of Communication and Information, Rutgers U.
+ The School of Information Studies, Syracuse U.
+ U. of North Carolina, School of Information and Library Science
+ School of Information, U. of Texas
+ Information School, U. of Washington
