Now Available: MOBI Versions for Most of The Internet Archives 1.8 Million Books

From an E-Mail:

The Internet Archive (IA) is pleased to announce the general availability of free MOBI versions of the majority of the 1.8 million digitized public
domain books held at the Internet Archive. (These books are believed to be in the public domain in the United States).

MOBI ebooks can be found at our texts site, http://archive.org/details/texts. An example ebook available in MOBI format, /Faith, War, and Policy/, can be found at: http://www.archive.org/details/faithwarpolicyad00murr

For now, Internet Archive MOBI files are being made available through our web site only; Kindle readers seeking MOBI versions will need to navigate to the IA's text archive to search for matching titles using device built-in browsers. MOBI files can also be transferred to the Kindle through a USB connection in situations where direct access is not feasible. Internet Archive public domain texts are not available currently through Kindle's
online store or via Whispernet.

The Internet Archive will soon begin integrating MOBI ebooks into our BookServer architecture (http://archive.org/bookserver), which will ensure that our cultural heritage in books is available to as many users as possible, from as many different places as possible, and on as many reading devices is possible. The Archive is committed to building a web of books that empowers readers and supports the ability of libraries, authors, and
publishers to make their books available through as many channels as they wish, on the terms they prefer.

MOBI files are provided on a beta, “as-is” basis only. Ebook services are under active development and may not always be available. The Internet Archive is continually enhancing text reflowable versions of digital books, including EPUB and MOBI. We are aware that many internal structural elements of these books are not yet optimized for use (for example, image handling and tables of contents); however we are committed to improving these features in the weeks ahead.

We welcome your feedback on this service, brought to you by the Internet Archive's BookServer team.
