If you're unaware of it, here's how it works from a user perspective. If you find an article from the Wall Street Journal online and it requires a subscription to view the full text, simply head to Google News and search using the words in the headline and in less than a second, you'll have access to the complete article.
Also, blocking "crawlers" from indexing a sites is far from new. This item from 2007 discusses the topic as well as this post from the other day where Carl Malamud mentions several U.S. Government sites blocking all crawlers as well as a few that only allow Googlebot index their site.
