Gates Foundation Proproses Nationwide Fiber-Optic Wiring, Proposal Includes Public Libraries

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has proposed a $10 billion project to wire the nation's "anchor institutions" with fiber-optic cable.

The Seattle-based charity filed a proposal to the Federal Communications Commission on Oct. 5, estimating how much it would cost to install fiber-optic lines at about [our emphasis} 123,000 hospitals, public libraries, public schools and community colleges. The study said it could cost $5 billion to $10 billion to supply institutions – in urban, suburban and rural communities – with high-speed Internet connections.

On Thursday, the FCC released a public notice (10 pages; PDF) asking for comment on the Gates Foundation's proposal.
