The address sought to enhance American credibility, promote tolerance and pluralism, and to articulate American interests on key issues of concern in the Muslim and Arab worlds. The President claimed responsibility to use his power to "fight against negative stereotypes of Islam wherever they appear," and urged Muslims to reject the "crude stereotype" of America as a "self-interested empire."
