"I loved being a reference librarian," Goverman said. "It was just the most amazing thing to have people come up to me and say, 'I got an A on my paper because of you' or 'You helped me find a job.' It was the most gratifying thing that you could imagine doing."
The number of librarians working in New York state in 2006 was 11,530, according to the New York state Department of Labor, which predicts the figure to rise slightly by 2010 to 11,780. Limits in government budgets and the increasing use of electronic resources are expected to inhibit job opportunities for librarians, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
However, jobs for librarians working outside traditional settings are expected to climb, including information brokers, nonprofits and consulting firms. Beyond that, many librarians are approaching retirement, resulting in job openings, especially in public schools.
