One aspect of the battle for Internet search engine supremacy has not changed in years: Google dominates it, Yahoo is a distant second and Microsoft trails even further behind. The latest tally from comScore, puts the market shares of the three companies in April at 64.2 percent, 20.4 percent and 8.2 percent respectively.
But that doesn’t mean all is quiet on the search front. Google, which is always looking over its shoulder, last week unveiled a string of enhancements to its search engine. In the coming weeks, Microsoft is expected to take its biggest shot at Google in years with a major revamp of its search service, which is likely to be re-branded from the bland and confusing Live Search.
Tuesday is Yahoo’s turn to tout its own progress at an event for reporters in San Francisco. The company is expected to give an update on the progress of BOSS, an innovative effort to open its search engine to other companies, and of Search Monkey, a service that allows Web publishers to show up more prominently in search results.
