A Busy Day at AOL: Acquires Meebo ($850 Million) and Launches New Grocery Coupon Search Service with Major U.S. Grocer

First:
From the AP article
Time Warner Inc's AOL Internet division said on Thursday it will buy social network Bebo for $850 million in cash, bolstering its consumer Internet offerings even as the media conglomerate mulls splitting off the business. Bebo, which claims a global membership of about 40 million users, is the top social network in Britain, Ireland and New Zealand, it said. It is No. 3 in the United States behind News Corp's MySpace and Facebook.

Here's the official news release from AOL.

Second:
A busy day for AOL news
++ AOL and Kroger Partner of New Shopping Search Shortcuts
AOL's new Shortcuts service makes it easier than ever for grocery shoppers to save money. Shortcuts lets shoppers link online coupons directly to their store loyalty cards. The Kroger Co., which operates nearly 2,500 stores in 31 states, has signed on as the first retail partner. Users simply go to Shortcuts.com, enter their loyalty card information, click on coupons they want, and the savings are automatically applied at checkout.

How does it work?
Consumers can go to Shortcuts.com for coupons. The coupons they select automatically link to their store loyalty cards and are redeemed at checkout.

More in this news release.

It will be interesting to see if other companies join this program given AOL's possible split-off "situation" at this time.
