The three day conference—sponsored by CRL's Global Resources Network, Columbia University’s Center for Human Rights Documentation and Research, and the University of Texas Libraries—convened at Columbia University’s Kellogg Conference Center in New York City on October 4, 2007 and focused on "Human Rights Archives and Documentation: Meeting the Needs of Research, Teaching, Advocacy, and Justice." Videos of conference presentations are available on Columbia University’s web site.

An article by Kate Doyle in the December 2007 issue of Harper’s magazine, “The Atrocity Files: Deciphering the Archives of Guatemala’s Dirty War,” elaborates on her conference presentation on the international effort to protect and preserve recently uncovered archives of the Guatemalan National Police.

The conference also featured keynote "conversations" with Juan E. Méndez, President of the International Center for Transitional Justice, and Dr. David Dr. Marwell, Chief of Investigative Research at the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Special Investigations. The conversations were moderated by Peter Rosenblum, Associate Clinical Professor of Human Rights Law, Columbia School of Law.

A full report on the conference will appear in the winter issue of the Focus on Global Resources newsletter, out next month. The newsletter will also feature a guide to CRL human rights-related collections.
