Information Visualization Tools: Baby NameVoyager (U.S. Rankings)
Every year we post rankings of the most popular baby names using data from the U.S. Social Security Administration. In addition to the lists themselves, the SSA site allows you to rank names by popularity and by year. In 2006, we made a brief mention of The Baby Name Wizard NameVoyager but after spending time with it today, think it's more than worthy of its own post. It's very addictive (you've been warned). :-)
The NameVoyager takes the Social Security data and allows you to visualize it. It's easy to use, type a full name, partial name (useful for various spellings) or one letter at a time and see how the name or names rank over time. You will need Java to use this app.
From the site:
Type a letter, and you'll zoom in to focus on how that initial has been used over the past century. Then type a few more letters, or a name. Each stripe is a timeline of one name, its width reflecting the name's changing popularity. If a name intrigues you, click on its stripe for a closer look.
