The Librarians: New TV Comedy Debuts in Australia

The Librarians: New TV Comedy Set To Debut in Australia
Here's a review of the program.

From the review:

The Librarians marks a sharp departure from the faux documentary style of much recent television, a style that, [co-creator Wayne] Hope argues, has outlived its use-by date and is much abused.

"When I first saw NYPD Blue years ago," says Hope, "I was riveted. I thought it was exciting and I thought it was born out of the drama, it added to the drama. Now you watch CSI and, good god, there must be 15 colourists alone working on it. Every image is whipped and tossed and baked and stir-fried, whether the story requires it or not.

"Plus, I think we got so far into shooting in a documentary style that no one ever asked the question, 'Who's shooting it, whose perspective is this from?'

"I'm a pedant for sense. I wanted to go back to straight storytelling," he says, citing shows such as Arrested Development and Six Feet Under as programs that influenced him and Butler.

Production designer Dale Mark filled the space with shelves stacked with tens of thousands of books, a children's cranny, computer terminals and couches. From the street it looked so realistic that passers-by inquired when the new library would open. On one occasion, a family wandered in and made themselves comfortable in the kid's section, the crew assuming they were extras.

Thanks to Kevin A. for the news tip.

Shirl's note: "Something else for us to hate," says It's all good, "(a) blog from four OCLC Online Computer Library Center staff about all things present and future that impact libraries and library users."

Alas, this has become such a thin-skinned profession -- which, personally, drives me nuts. We didn't like being called "hip," either. Please, people...let's get over ourselves.

Note that episodes of this series will be posted to the ABC website after they are broadcast.
