Survey Findings: Study on Information Security and e-Trust in Spanish households

Survey Results: Study on Information Security and e-Trust in Spanish households
137 pages; PDF.

Key Points:
Internet use habits:
• 78% of users use the home as the main place for accessing Internet.
• 93% of the homes surveyed access Internet with broadband.
• 90% of the users surveyed access Internet daily.
• The Internet services most used by homes are e-mail and searching for information.
• The Internet services administered by the highest quantity of users are websites and blogs.

Security habits in Internet
• Depending on the type of measures used, we can distinguish three types of protection in home computers:
-
Advanced Protection: They declare using both proactive and automatic protection.
-
Basic Protection. They mainly used automatic measures.

Deficient Protection. They have very low levels in both types of protection.
• 94.5% of Spanish households connected to Internet confirm having an antivirus programme, although 8% of these computers do not actually have them. The firewall is the second measure with the greatest penetration, 76%.
• Measures demanding more active behaviour on the part of the user (e.g. backups or hard disk partition) are less frequent: 35% of the users make backups of their files and less than 10% encrypt documents.
• The users forecast a significant increase in the use of non-automatic security measures.
• The main reasons for not using security measures are ignorance or the perception that they are not necessary.
• Amongst the panelists who do not use antivirus, 38.1% say that they do not use it because they think it slows down computer use and Internet navigation.
