Direct From Reuters Labs: Newsmaps and Related Tools

Recipe:
+ Reuters News Content
+ Metacarta Geographic Search
See Also: MetaCarta GeoIntel for Petroleum (Free Beta)
+ Microsoft Virtual Earth and Google Maps
and you have a new project from Reuters Labs: Newsmaps.
To use: Cursor over any red dot on the map, see a one or more stories related to that location. Click link to read story. Not much online now but remember, this is a beta (if that) from the Reuters Labs (RL).

Note: Default is MS VE. To change to Google Maps look for the "Change Map Provider" link near the top right side of the map.

New idea? Not really.
1) BBC Newsmap (Last 12 Hours of UK Stories)

2) Ask.com Earthquake Map* (near real time, global in scope)

3) Check out this 1999 article by Paula Hane about NewsMaps.com from Cartia.
In many ways, Newsmaps.com was more sophisticated than the current RL project.

Archived NewsMap pages:
October 12, 1999

Quick Tour from December 15, 2000
Links for complete tour (7 pages) will find pages in The Wayback Machine. By early 2002 the service was offline.
