Mobile Payments: Send Money Using AOL Instant Messenger
Pay Bills Online with AOL Instant Messenger
The future is now*! You have to wonder when companies (instead of just friends) will allow bills to be paid using this service. We bet it will not be long.*
Obopay, the first comprehensive mobile payment service in the U.S., today announced the availability of a new AIM Obopay plugin for users of AOL's AIM service, the largest instant messaging community in the U.S. This new plugin allows eligible[1] AIM users to launch Obopay and use it to make payments directly from the AIM Buddy List feature. Users can sign up for Obopay and download the free AIM Obopay plugin at www.obopay.com/aim.
"Our busy, on-the-go users have quickly grown accustomed to being able to use their mobile phones to instantly and effortlessly send money to others anytime, anywhere in the U.S.," said Obopay CEO Carol L. Realini. "With the new AIM Obopay plugin, we make it even easier by allowing AIM desktop users to send money directly from their AIM Buddy List to another AIM user's cell phone.”

* PayPal also offers a mobile service to send money by phone to a friends phone # or email address.
Note: Back in 2004 Qantas ran a trial allowing some passengers to check-in for their flight using their mobile phones. A barcode would appear on the phone which could be used as their boarding pass. (via ZDNet)
