Resource of the Week: Historic Government Publications From WWII

Resource of the Week:
Historic Government Publications From World War II

By Shirl Kennedy, Senior Editor

Let's face it; we're librarians. We love history, we're big fans of digital libraries...and we have a somewhat unnatural fondness for government documents. So we were delighted to discover this particular time sink collection, which we felt you might enjoy as well.

This particular digital library, which got its formal start in 2001, is a project of Southern Methodist University's (SMU) Central University Libraries. The organization of the site encourages browsing; you can browse all documents via an alphabetical title list, or jump right to a special collection of (fascinating) Pocket Guides to foreign nations prepared during the war for U.S. servicemen. Note that the icons on the home page are derived from a manual issued by the United States Office of Civilian Defense in 1941.

We especially like the fact that you can either click through to browse each document page by page, or download the entire item as a PDF, for closer examination and/or printing at your leisure. A text box for a quick keyword search is available on the home page. More extensive search options allow you to restrict your search field -- e.g., title, author, etc. Or you can build your own search, with boolean operators. Extensive help is available.

You'll also find a link to the Melvin C. Shaffer Collection of World War II-vintage photos, of North Africa (1943), Germany (1945), and Italy and Southern France (1944 - 1945). You can browse or search; options are presented as links at the bottom of this page of biographical information about Schaffer, who had a long career as a medical photographer.

And there's a small collection of annotated links to other WWII databases and online exhibitions.

A lot of the talk around social media in the last year has been around information overload. Social media has provided us with new and exciting ways to create content.
