Study finds weak participation on Web 2.0 sites
If nothing else, this report should remind the info professional that our skills and abilities are not going to be trumped by "cool" 2.0 technology anytime in the immediate future. Don't get us wrong, we love 2.0 technology as much as the next person, especially when it can make life online easier, maybe even saving the user time. The study shows that participation is not as great as many might think with many 2.0 sites. A few of the MANY services/skills a good info pro can provide (and teach) can save people, time (everyone wants more time), effort, and aggravation. The challenges (yes, once again, marketing coming into play) for the info industry include demonstrating to the public the importance and vitality of not only tools/technology (that can only go so far) but also our core skill-set (the human factor) including the abilities to select, organize, and use information tools. Said another way, it's about using the right tool/resource at the right time.
